Curriculum library
Fiber optics certification training, from foundation to specialist.
Forty-four complete modules across nine tracks, organized so a technician can start with the fundamentals and move directly into the work that matters.
Build the path the job requires.
New technicians can begin with CFOT, while experienced installers can move into a focused specialist track after confirming the required foundation. CPCT provides a parallel premises-cabling path across copper, fiber, and wireless systems.
Every module combines concept teaching, a field or planning workflow, and a seven-question certification quiz with answer explanations.
CFOT is the prerequisite for most CFOS specialist credentials. CPCT is a separate foundational path for premises cabling work.
Curriculum
CFOT Foundations
Eight modules covering the full foundational body of knowledge.
Worked example: module 04
Termination & Splicing Basics
Mechanical splicing, fusion splicing, and connector termination, and why a technician needs to know when each one is the right call.
Field SkillA full step-by-step splice cycle, plus what a bad splice job looks like before it turns into a service call.
Lesson QuizScenario questions matched to the FOA's published termination and splicing KSA categories.
Curriculum
CFOS/S: Splicing Specialist
Five modules building deep fusion and mechanical splicing competency.
Worked example: module 03
Fusion Splicing Deep Dive
Arc parameters, loss estimation, and how ribbon and mass fusion splicers differ from single-fiber machines.
Field SkillThe full splice cycle step by step, plus the visual and instrument cues that flag a weak splice on the tray before it becomes a service call.
Lesson QuizExam-style questions on splice loss budgeting and fusion parameter selection.
Curriculum
CFOS/T: Testing Specialist
Five modules covering the instruments and analysis skills that define fiber testing work.
Worked example: module 03
OTDR Trace Analysis
Backscatter, reflectance, dead zones, and how the trace line encodes distance and event severity.
Field SkillSpotting splice loss, connector reflectance, and fiber breaks directly on a live trace, and what a bad reading looks like.
Lesson QuizPractice traces matched to the FOA's testing and troubleshooting KSA categories.
Curriculum
CFOS/O: Outside Plant Specialist
Five modules covering OSP cable systems, closures, termination, testing, construction, grounding, and safe installation.
Worked example: module 05
OSP Design, Construction & Installation Safety
Connect system requirements to aerial, buried, conduit, and underwater route choices.
Field SkillPlan reel setup, pulling hardware, communication, stop conditions, post-pull testing, and records.
Lesson QuizApply route, loss-budget, construction, and safety judgment to realistic OSP scenarios.
Curriculum
CFOS/H: FTTx Specialist
Five modules covering FTTx and PON architecture, cabling, testing, ONT commissioning, and customer-premises work.
Worked example: module 04
ONT Installation & GPON Premises Systems
Trace service from the OLT through splitters to the ONT and its voice, data, and video outputs.
Field SkillSelect the location, protect the optical path, connect power and services, then prove operation.
Lesson QuizWork through ONT, premises-cabling, power, code, and commissioning scenarios.
Curriculum
CFOS/D: Network Design Specialist
Five modules covering requirements, cable-plant design, loss budgets, project paperwork, test planning, oversight, and restoration.
Worked example: module 02
Cable Plant Design & Loss Budgets
Turn endpoint, route, capacity, and environment requirements into a buildable cable-plant plan.
Planning SkillDocument fiber, splice, connector, and margin assumptions so another reviewer can verify the arithmetic.
Lesson QuizApply component selection and loss calculations to practical design decisions.
Curriculum
CPCT: Premises Cabling Technician
Five modules connecting copper, fiber, wireless, codes, design, installation, and testing inside structured cabling systems.
Worked example: module 04
Wireless Access Point Cabling & Integration
Connect AP placement and radio coverage decisions to the wired backhaul that supports them.
Field SkillRoute, terminate, test, label, and document the copper or fiber link serving an access point.
Lesson QuizEvaluate AP backhaul media, placement, pathways, testing, and documentation.
Curriculum
CFOS/C: Connector Specialist
Three modules covering connector selection, termination processes, inspection, optical testing, and documentation.
Worked example: module 02
Hands-On Termination Processes
Compare adhesive, crimp, prepolished, splice-on connector, and pigtail processes.
Field SkillPrepare the cable, cleave, splice, protect, inspect, and verify the completed connector.
Lesson QuizChoose and troubleshoot connector processes across realistic installation conditions.
Curriculum
CFOS/FC: Fiber Characterization Specialist
Three modules covering characterization scope, test fundamentals, spectral attenuation, chromatic dispersion, and PMD.
Worked example: module 03
Understanding & Testing CD and PMD
Separate chromatic dispersion from polarization mode dispersion and understand why both constrain long-haul systems.
Field SkillPrepare the link, control the setup, capture results, evaluate variability, and document the span.
Lesson QuizApply cause, tolerance, test-method, compensation, and result-variability concepts.
