Certification roadmap

The full ladder, foundation to specialist.

Every FOA-aligned credential in the fiber optics path, organized the way the industry organizes it: one foundation tier, then two kinds of specialization, skills-based and applications-based.

Foundation tier

Start here, before any specialist track.

Both foundation credentials assume no prior certification. Most specialist tracks require CFOT first.

CFOT Certified Fiber Optic Technician

The broad foundational cert covering fiber theory, components, installation, termination, splicing basics, testing fundamentals, troubleshooting, and standards. Required before most specialist certs.

Available now
CPCT Certified Premises Cabling Technician

A parallel track covering copper, fiber, and wireless premises cabling for LANs, security systems, DAS, and building networks.

Available now

Specialist tier: skills-based

Deep, hands-on skill certifications.

Each skills-based specialist track focuses on a single discipline in enough depth to certify field-ready technique.

CFOS/O Outside Plant

Aerial, underground, and buried cable installation practices for outside plant fiber networks.

Available now
CFOS/S Splicing

Deep skill cert in mechanical and fusion splicing, cable prep, splice closures and trays, and splice verification via OTDR.

Available now
CFOS/C Connectors

Termination and connectorization techniques across adhesive, mechanical, and pre-polished connector types.

Available now
CFOS/T Testing

Deep skill cert in test equipment (power meters, OLTS, OTDR, VFL), insertion and return loss testing, OTDR trace analysis, and troubleshooting complex links.

Available now
CFOS/FC Fiber Characterization

Advanced measurement of fiber transmission properties for engineering-grade link qualification.

Available now
CFOS/D Network Design

Link budget planning, route design, and system-level design decisions for fiber networks.

Available now

Specialist tier: applications-based

Certifications built around where fiber gets deployed.

Applications-based tracks apply foundation and skills knowledge to a specific network context or industry.

CFOS/H FTTH / FTTx

Fiber-to-the-home and fiber-to-the-x deployment practices for residential and access networks.

Available now
CFOS/L Optical LANs

Passive optical LAN design and installation as an alternative to traditional copper LAN architecture.

Coming to the academy
CFOS/DC Data Centers

High-density fiber infrastructure practices specific to data center environments.

Coming to the academy
CFOS/W Fiber for Wireless

Fiber backhaul and fronthaul infrastructure supporting wireless network sites.

Coming to the academy
CFOS/A FTTA

Fiber-to-the-antenna practices for cell site and distributed antenna deployments.

Coming to the academy
CFOS/DAS DAS

Distributed antenna system fiber infrastructure for in-building and campus wireless coverage.

Coming to the academy

Tracks marked "Coming to the academy" are on the development roadmap, with no fixed dates yet. It's better to say so plainly than run a fake countdown.
